OUR MISSION

Building Bridges of International Understanding and Goodwill

Where It All Started: A Partnership in Harmony

The roots of Jazz Crossing the Border trace back to a powerful collaboration between International Jazz Day AZ Foundation and Scottsdale Sister Cities. Together, under the leadership of Doc Jones, they created the very first International Jazz Day Festival in รlamos, Sonora, Mexico โ€” a moment that marked the beginning of something truly special.

What began as a cultural exchange has grown into a lasting relationship built on friendship, education, and the unifying power of music. Over the past eight years, this partnership has brought Arizona and Sonora closer together โ€” connecting musicians, students, and communities through workshops, concerts, and lifelong friendships.

โ€œWhen we first came to รlamos, we had no idea it would spark a movement,โ€ says Doc Jones. โ€œThanks to our partnership with Scottsdale Sister Cities, weโ€™ve built bridges that go far beyond music โ€” weโ€™ve built family.โ€

Today, that spirit continues to thrive as Jazz Crossing the Border celebrates its 8th anniversary, inspiring young musicians and strengthening cultural ties between two nations โ€” one note, one concert, and one friendship at a time.

Our mission is to promote the City of Scottsdale and the Scottsdale Sister Cities Association, Inc., as ambassadors of international friendship and goodwill. The mission is accomplished through programs such as student, educational, cultural and economic development exchanges, which create long-term international partnerships.
